The carbon capture industry has made significant strides in recent years, with plans for over 130 Direct Air Capture (DAC) facilities currently under development. As the demand for air-captured CO2 continues to grow, so do concerns about the efficacy and sustainability of these projects.

Currently, six DAC projects are underway, with two expected to come online in 2024 and 2025 respectively. The largest of these will be located in Iceland, capable of capturing 36 kilotons of CO2 per year, while another facility in the United States will capture up to 1 million tons per year.

However, not all DAC projects are created equal. Many are small-scale, with only a few commercial agreements in place for the captured CO2. The majority operate on a testing and demonstration basis, leaving concerns about their long-term viability.

Despite these limitations, the industry remains optimistic about its prospects. 27 DAC plants have already been commissioned across Europe, North America, Japan, and the Middle East, with many more in various stages of development. As demand for low-emission synthetic hydrocarbon fuels grows, so too does the need for effective carbon capture solutions.
